The Baltimore Orioles started as the Milwaukee Brewers in 1901. They were
a charter member of the American League, but relocated for their second
season to St. Louis. They were known as the St. Louis Browns until they
moved to Baltimore in 1954. In the fifty two years they played in St.
Louis, the Browns only made it to the World Series one time. That was
during World War II, when many players were overseas. They lost to the
Cardinals. For their first thirty eight years in Baltimore, the Orioles played at
Memorial Stadium, which they shared for most of that time with the Colts
of the NFL. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Orioles had one of
the best pitching staffs in all of baseball. That pitching, along with
superstars like Brooks Robinson and Frank Robinson won the Orioles two
World Series championships. The team won a third World Series title in 1983 behind the leadership of
Cal Ripkin, Jr. In 1992, the Orioles moved into Oriole Park at Camden Yards, a ballpark
which would spark a revolution in stadium design. |
