The Oakland Athletics were a charter member of the American League. From 1901 until 1953, they were known as the Philadelphia Athletics. In 1954, the team moved to Kansas City, but never had much luck there. So, in 1968, owner Charley O. Finley moved his team to Oakland, where they play today.
