The Milwaukee Brewers began as an American League expansion team in 1969.
The team was known as the Seattle Pilots and played at Sicks's Stadium in
Seattle. After only one season, the team went bankrupt. Just before the
1970 season was about to start, Bud Selig, a Milwaukee auto dealer bought
the team and moved them to Milwaukee. Selig had been looking to bring a team to Milwaukee since the Braves left
town after the 1965 season. The Brewers played in Milwaukee County
Stadium, the same place where the Braves played, until 1999. In 2000, the
Brewers moved into the gigantic Miller Park, which features a retractable
roof. The Brewers made it to the World Series in 1982, but have never won. The Milwaukee Brewers had an up and down 2010 season, which ended down, with the team finishing below .500 and well out of the race in the NL Central. But in moves which surprised many in baseball, the team went out and got some big names in the offseason, and in 2011, they have clear hopes and expectations to win the NL Central and make it to the postseason.
So far so good, as the team started slowly but is now basically tied for the lead in the division before the All Star break. The two big acquisitions for the team bolstered the pitching staff, as the Brewers brought in both Zack Greinke, a Cy Young winner, and Shaun Marcum, a solid and sturdy pitcher.
The lineup of everyday players will look familiar, and there are a lot of highlights. Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder provide the power and drive in the runs, and guys like Rickie Weeks and Corey Hart help to spread out the lineup and do their part.
The team wants to win the division and head back to the postseason, and they will likely need to if they want to be able to hold onto Fielder instead of having to trade him or lose him to free agency. So, do your part to support the team and keep those players where they belong by picking up Milwaukee Brewers tickets and rooting the team on against the crowded group of competitors in the NL Central. |
