The Braves began as a National League franchise in Boston in 1876. They spent the next seventy-seven years in Boston, and were known at different times as the Red Caps, Beaneaters and Bees. For the first few decades of their existence, the Braves were one of the most successful teams in the National League. However, as the years went by, the Braves found themselves increasingly playing second fiddle to the Red Sox. In 1953, the team moved to Milwaukee, where they appeared before record crowds and won a World Series in 1957. The crowds began to wane, however, and by 1966 the team had moved again to Atlanta.

While in Atlanta, the Braves fielded mostly mediocre teams until 1991. That year, the Braves put together the first in a string of division winning seasons which continues to this day. Despite winning their division every season for the last fourteen years and appearing in five World Series, the Braves have only won the World Series once during that time. In fact, the Florida Marlins, which play in the same division as the Braves, have won the World Series twice during the same period, both as a wild card.

The Atlanta Braves made a push to the Wild Card of the National League last season, led by the strength of their phenom rookie Jason Heyward. This year, even with Heyward missing some time already with injuries, the team is still right in contention for a trip to the postseason, and a mixture of young and old can be thanked for that.

At one end of the spectrum is Heyward, along with his good friend, and rookie this year, Freddie Freeman. Those two players could make the Atlanta Braves a formidable team for the next decade all on their own. Then you have one of the best catchers in the game with Brian McCann, and the return of the franchise player himself, Chipper Jones, who didn't retire after 2010 after his season was cut short with an injury.

The pitching staff is led by another wily veteran, Tim Hudson, who is back yet again and is still commanding the mound. He's teamed with Derek Lowe at the front of the rotation, but it's Jair Jurrjens who may be the best of all of them right now.

The scary thing is that the Braves haven't been firing on all cylinders, with Heyward struggling, Dan Uggla having a disastrous start to the beginning of 2011, and so forth. If they put it all together, this team will be a major threat come October, and Braves tickets will once again be the must-have items in Atlanta.
