The Los Angeles Angels began as an American League expansion team in 1961. Gene Autry owned the team from its inception until his death in 1998. He was willing to pay top dollar for talent and fielded teams that came close to playing in the World Series. However, it wasn't until 2002 that the team finally made it. The Angels defeated the Giants for the championship in the first World Series ever played by two wild card teams.
