The Seattle Mariners began as an American League expansion team in 1977.

The Seattle Mariners were thinking that 2010 could have been a great year for them. They started the season with Cliff Lee after all, and in combination with King Felix, the team was supposed to compete for the playoffs. The team started terribly though and never recovered and that was that, unfortunately.

They only won 61 games on the year, and they traded away Lee in the middle of the season to the Texas Rangers. Felix Hernandez still pitched excellently though, and even though his record was only 13-12, he won the AL Cy Young award with a 2.27 ERA, nearly 250 innings pitched and 232 strikeouts.
So far in 2011, the Mariners have been hovering around 500, and are in the middle of the pack in the AL West, with room to make a move if they can play a bit better. Ichiro Suzuki is actually off to a very slow start for him, and Chone Figgins has been playing poorly too, so the offense could take off and improve. Hernandez is pitching well again, but needs to have help from the other guys in the rotation like Jason Vargas and the young Michael Pineda.
Last year was supposed to be great for the Mariners, but maybe 2011 will have a magical run, or if not, 2012. Either way, Mariners tickets are a great purchase, and seeing Ichiro and King Felix alone is more than worth the price of admission for any game.
