The New York Mets began as a National League expansion franchise in 1962.
The Giants and Dodgers had left New York only four years earlier. The Mets
put together seven abysmal seasons, including the worst season by any
franchise in history, until finally compiling a winning season. And, boy,
was it a winning season. In fact, it was amazing. The ?Amazing Mets? won
the World Series in 1969 in their eighth year as a team. The Mets would appear again in three more World Series. They won in
dramatic fashion against the Red Sox in 1986, and lost in 2000 to the
Yankees in the first New York subway series since the Yankees beat the
Dodgers in 1956. Fans of the New York Mets will tell you that it's never easy rooting for this franchise. Perhaps now though it's never been as hard as it is in 2011. Fred Wilpon, who owns the team, is being sued in relation to the Madoff scheme, and he could end up losing the club. In the meantime, they are stuck in a financial mess, and the team's ability to improve itself and make the moves they need has been jeopardized.
The major bright spot in 2011 has also been one of the sorest points, and that's Jose Reyes. He is back to full health and is playing out of his mind, hitting for a great average and using his speed to pile up triples and stolen bases while playing great defensive short stop as well. But the team will likely not be able to afford resigning him.
Meanwhile, David Wright struggled to start the year and then went on the DL, and first baseman Ike Davis started hot but then also got hurt. Carlos Beltran is also healthy and playing at his best, like Reyes, but also like Reyes, will probably be traded or simply not signed again.
So here the fans are yet again, and they have reacted by not buying up those Mets tickets to Citi field. But they're missing out by not seeing the dynamic Reyes and Beltran in action, and the rest of the team who is gritty and trying to stay in contention even with all the distractions and injuries. So get your hands on some Mets tickets, get down to the field and take in a game! |
