The San Diego Padres began as a National League expansion team in 1969. McDonald's founder Ray Kroc bought the team in 1974. Ten years later, the
team was in the World Series. They made it back to the October Classic in
1988, but have never won.
McDonald's founder Ray Kroc bought the team in 1974. Ten years later, the
team was in the World Series. They made it back to the October Classic in
1988, but have never won. Their new ballpark has provided the funds to hire star players. They
contended right up to the end in 2004, and have brought in more talent to
capture the title this year. The San Diego Padres made a fantastic and surprising run towards the postseason in 2010. Unfortunately, they came up just a little bit short. They lost the division by two games to the San Francisco Giants, who of course went on to win the World Series.
An even worse blow came in the offseason though, and that's when star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez was dealt to the Boston Red Sox. Still, it's not all bad for the Padres, as it wasn't expected that he would have been with the club all of last year, but he helped lead the team to that great regular season.
In the first half of 2011 though, the team has been down, and has dug a hole for themselves as they sit in last place in the NL West. That's despite the work of a pitching staff which has been better than some thought. Aaron Harang, Tim Stauffer and Dustin Moseley are all pitching well for the Padres, but the team has hardly been getting any offense.
It's certainly a transition year for the Padres, and you'll find that Padres tickets aren't too hard to find. But the team does have talent and it does have youth on the rise, with players like centerfielder Cameron Maybin, third baseman Chase Headley and others. So before long they could turn things around and work their way back towards contention. |
