The Minnesota Twins began as the Washington Senators in 1901. A charter
member of the American League, the Senators enjoyed some glory in the
1920s behind the pitching of Walter Johnson. However, the Senators were
known mainly for the regularity in which they finished in last place. The team relocated to Bloomington, Minnesota in 1961 and quickly became a
contender behind the bat of Harmon Killebrew. The Twins have won two World Series and, in recent years, have fielded
division leading teams. Pitcher Johann Guzman won the Cy Young Award in
2004 and promises to lead the Twins to good things in the future. Year in and year out it seems like the Minnesota Twins end up either winning the AL Central or at least making a serious run at it. All of this while they have had to get rid of some of their marquee players to make salary room.
Well, the team wasn't going to let hometown hero and face of the franchise Joe Mauer go. So they locked him up with a huge contract to keep him where he belongs, and there's a brand new stadium which the club has been trying to fill up with holders of Twins tickets packages and season tickets.
The problem has been that Mauer missed the first few months of the 2011 season mostly. Meanwhile, Justin Morneau hasn't been the MVP caliber player he used to be, and has missed a lot of action, and the pitching staff, featuring guys like Carl Pavano and Francisco Liriano, is at times promising and at other times maddening.
The Twins dug themselves a huge hole at the start of the 2011 campaign, and will have a long road for the rest of the season to find their way out of it, especially in the AL Central where there are many teams vying for the crown ahead of time. They'll need to rely on the face of the franchise, Mauer, to go on an MVP-worthy tear and take care of business, and maybe that will bring Morneau, Jim Thome and Michael Cuddyer all up to the top of their games as well. |
