Now that the Red Sox have finally won the World Series, the Cubs have the
mantle of World Series futility all to themselves. Instead of the Curse of
the Bambino, we're likely to hear more about the Curse of the Billy Goat.
The Cubs haven't been to the October classic since 1954, and haven't won a
World Series since 1908. Only their fellow Chicagoans, the White Sox, come
close to matching their championship drought. The Chicago Cubs and their fan base might be used to failing to win championships at this point, but that doesn't mean they aren't frustrated by bad and disappointing seasons and performances. There was a lot of upheaval with the team, its front office and its leadership over the past year, and many new players were brought into the mix.
The team added pitcher Matt Garza, first baseman Carlos Pena and others, and wanted to rely heavily upon young sensation Starlin Castro. Castro is delivering, and he is only going to get better and better for the team. Unfortunately, Pena has struggled, and Garza has been having mixed results.
Aramis Ramirez has been healthy but his power hasn't been there, and Alfonso Soriano is having a decent enough season, at least if he didn't have that huge contract. There have been more of the usual flare-ups with Carlos Zambrano as well, adding to the woes for the team. As a result, they have dropped back down to near the cellar of the NL Central, and it looks like contending in 2011 is just another pipe dream.
But there is still a lot of talent on the team, the Cubs just need to make more changes and rely on some of those young guns on the rise. Still, it's always a good time to buy Chicago Cubs tickets, which are very hard to find to begin with, and head down to one of the world's true sporting gems, Wrigley Field. |
