The Florida Marlins began as a National League expansion team in 1993.
Then owner, Wayne Huizenga, was willing to pay top dollar to acquire good
players quickly. As a result, the team won its first World Series in only
six seasons. Unfortunately, attendance disappointed, and Mr. Huizenga
quickly dismantle his high-cost team. Two owners and seven years later,
the Marlins were back with a younger, less costly team that again won the
World Series. After their second championship, the Marlins were able to
retain most of their star players and remain a serious contender in the
National League East. The Florida Marlins finished at around .500 in 2010, and considering how young they were, that was a great result. In 2011, with all of those young kids, the team burst out of the gate and looked to be a force for a year. Then they went on a terrible 20 game stretch, losing nearly every game, and the manager resigned, replaced by World Series winning Jack McKeon, a favorite of the franchise.
Even with that bad stretch that sunk them into last place in the middle of the 2011 season, the future is still bright and sunny in Florida. Don't give up those Marlins tickets just yet, because these young guys are no joke. They are led by Mike Stanton, a five tool player in the outfield that is still learning how to play the game, and the dynamic Hanley Ramirez, now a veteran of the club but still young and growing.
The pitching staff is potentially even more promising, led by ace Josh Johnson, who can be one of the best in the game. Anibel Sanchez also has the tools to be dominant and has been showing that thus far in 2011.
You'll see plenty of open seats on TV, with unsold tickets to all of the Marlins home games, but you don't want to pass up on these young guys, whatever the record of the team is. See them in action now and watch them continue to grow and improve and you'll be in for a real treat.
