The Washington Redskins seem to have playoff hopes and expectations just about every season, while falling short just about every season as well. Even bringing in head coach Mike Shanahan and quarterback Donovan McNabb couldn't save the club last year.

In fact, those two moves seemed to doom the team, with McNabb quickly falling out of favor and eventually being benched. Meanwhile, all year long Shanahan was feuding with the $100 million man Albert Haynesworth. Clearly, it wasn't a smooth start to his coaching life in Washington D.C., but Shanahan still hopes to turn things around for the Redskins.

It's a matter though of who is going to get the job done. Fan favorite and team leader Clinton Portis won't be back, and McNabb won't be either. That puts Rex Grossman in the starter's role at quarterback, and creates an opening at running back. There are not many big names at wide receiver besides Santana Moss, but tight end Chris Cooley is one of the best in the league.

The Redskins are really relying on their young defensive talent to lead the charge into the future. The enthusiastic fans with their Redskins tickets are looking to guys like Brian Orakpo, LaRon Landry and others to be the stalwarts of the future and this transitional phase.

Will it be enough to satiate the fans, the finicky owner in Dan Snyder and on down the line? Shanahan better hope so, or else his time in D.C. could end up quicker than he had been expecting.
